Villa Nautica, in collaboration with diveOceanus and The Hub 10 – Finland International School, has launched the first phase of an inspiring long-term coral restoration and citizen science programme, transforming the resort’s vibrant house reef into a living classroom for the next generation of marine conservationists.
The initiative combines hands-on environmental education with meaningful coral restoration, giving students the opportunity to contribute directly to the preservation of the Maldives’ delicate marine ecosystems.

Inspiring Future Ocean Guardians
The programme began with an introductory marine biology session at the school before students traveled to Villa Nautica, where they worked alongside the marine experts from diveOceanus.
During the visit, students learned to identify different coral species, assess coral health, measure coral fragments, and collect scientific baseline data. They also helped prepare five dedicated coral restoration frames that will become part of the resort’s growing reef restoration project.
More than a one-time educational activity, the programme empowers students to become active participants in marine conservation while gaining valuable scientific knowledge through real-world experience.
Citizen Science in Action
A key feature of the programme is the use of an innovative Coral Tracker system, which individually records every coral fragment attached to the restoration frames.
When students return approximately six months later, they will compare new measurements with the original data to monitor coral growth, survival rates, and the marine life that begins to inhabit the developing reef structures.
As the coral colonies mature, students will witness how once-bare restoration frames gradually transform into thriving reef habitats that support fish and countless other marine species.
The initiative has also been designed with long-term sustainability in mind. As each class graduates, responsibility for monitoring the restoration sites will be passed on to the next group of students, creating an ongoing citizen science project that continues to grow with each new generation.
Supporting Coral Restoration Across Villa Resorts
The educational programme forms part of Villa Nautica’s broader coral restoration initiative, established in 2024 and managed by diveOceanus.
Today, Villa Nautica maintains approximately 65 coral restoration frames, contributing to a network of more than 130 restoration frames across Villa Resorts.
According to Mohamed Seeneen, Director of Operations at diveOceanus, years of experience restoring reefs during periods of elevated sea temperatures have shaped the programme’s approach.
Rather than continually introducing new donor colonies, the team focuses on propagating coral fragments that have naturally survived previous bleaching events. By cultivating these more resilient corals, the project aims to strengthen the long-term health and resilience of the Maldives’ reefs.
The restoration efforts are already delivering encouraging results, with coral colonies developing into natural reef formations and marine species such as the Harlequin Filefish returning to the restoration sites—a positive sign that the growing habitats are successfully supporting marine biodiversity.
Sustainable Tourism with Lasting Impact
Villa Nautica’s latest initiative demonstrates how tourism, education, and conservation can work together to protect one of the Maldives’ greatest natural treasures.
By engaging young learners in meaningful scientific research while actively restoring coral reefs, the resort is helping cultivate a deeper understanding of marine conservation and ensuring that future generations play an active role in preserving the extraordinary underwater world of the Maldives.
