Maldives Tourism Shows Signs of Recovery as International Visitor Arrivals Rise

The Maldives tourism industry is showing encouraging signs of recovery, with international visitor arrivals increasing once again after several months of fluctuations linked to travel disruptions caused by tensions in the Middle East.

According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism, more than 14,000 visitors arrived in the Maldives during the first two days of August, representing a 2.1% increase compared to the same period last year. The positive start to the month signals renewed confidence in the destination as global travel demand continues to strengthen.

Recovery After Temporary Slowdown

While the Maldives experienced year-on-year declines in monthly arrivals between March and July—apart from a modest increase in May—the latest figures suggest the market is gradually regaining momentum.

April recorded the largest decrease, with arrivals falling by 24.5% compared to the previous year. Visitor numbers rebounded slightly in May with a 1.7% increase, before declining again by 12% in June. Despite these temporary challenges, industry stakeholders remain optimistic as demand continues to improve.

So far in 2026, the Maldives has welcomed approximately 1.2 million visitors, remaining one of the world’s most sought-after luxury island destinations.

Resorts Continue to Lead the Market

Luxury resorts remain the preferred accommodation choice for travelers, accounting for 73% of all tourist arrivals. Guesthouses represent 22.5%, while hotels account for 2.4%, reflecting the continued popularity of the Maldives’ world-renowned private island resort experience.

China and Russia Remain Key Source Markets

China continues to be the Maldives’ largest international source market, contributing 220,730 visitors, or 17.8% of total arrivals this year.

The top five visitor markets currently are:

  • China – 220,730 visitors (17.8%)
  • Russia – 182,012 visitors (14.7%)
  • United Kingdom – 98,692 visitors (7.9%)
  • Italy – 80,523 visitors (6.5%)
  • Germany – 77,455 visitors (6.2%)

These figures highlight the Maldives’ strong appeal across Europe and Asia, supported by excellent air connectivity and a diverse collection of resorts catering to every style of traveler.

Looking Ahead

The Maldivian government has set an ambitious target of welcoming 2.5 million visitors in 2026. While geopolitical developments have presented challenges for both aviation and tourism, the outlook remains positive as international travel continues to recover.

Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has previously stated that the government’s priority is to ensure annual arrivals remain above last year’s total of 2.2 million visitors, reinforcing confidence in the long-term resilience of the destination.
